The artworks of Crafting Simulations are based on and named after Minimalist works by Carl Andre, Richard Serra, and Donald Judd. Crafting Simulations is referent to highly circulated photographs of original artworks by Andre, Serra, and Judd. Crafting Simulations is composed of multiple photographic prints of metal surfaces. The body of work presents alternative modes in utilizing photographic representation to circulate the experience of artworks by taking advantage of photographic illusion and materiality. The scale, installation, and placement of the pieces within a space become formal considerations in experiencing the artworks. Crafting Simulations adopt the vernacular of Minimal sculpture into photography. When consumed with this vernacular the pieces have the potential to activate the same conventions of Minimalist sculptures. In doing so, the pieces subvert Minimalism though the delicate nature of the photographic print.
